| FOUNDATION The Fondazione Chierese per il Tessile e per il Museo del Tessile
(Chieri Foundation for the Textile and for the Textile Museum) was set up on 8 November
1997, with the participation of the Municipality of Chieri, the Piedmont Region, the Turin
Province, the Chamber of Commerce and of 50 founder members representing the major cotton
textile industries in Chieri and in Piedmont. The establishment of the Foundation followed
the opening, one year before, of the Textile Museum, in its temporary location in the XV
cent. Santa Chiara Convent (later Levi's weaving mill), where textile machines and
equipment of the past are displayed, waiting for the restoration of an ancient industrial
building, named "Imbiancheria del Vajro", as its final seat. Central in this
project, indeed also its starting point, is a textile tradition dating back to the XIII
cent. and still to-day outstanding for a number of factories that make of Chieri the most
important centre for the cotton textile industry in Piedmont, offering a wide range of
products (household linen, curtains, carpets, upholstery fabrics, clothing fabrics,
embroideries and prints, technical fabrics for industry, textile design). Main aims of the
Fondazione are to promote the image of the Chieri textile industry in Italy and abroad, to
create a collective trade mark, to foster the technical training of the personnel and to
set up a technological laboratory, as provided for in the Statute. Our purpose in setting
up the Museum is to divulge the knowledge and the values of this peculiar local activity,
in combination with the other activities in the area. The Foundation will be pleased, on
request:
